Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System:

Equipped with this 4WD System, you'll feel confident that traction control will not be an issue in the 2011 Ford Explorer. Intelligent 4WD is fully automatic and engages when wheel slip is detected. The Terrain Management System allows the driver to specify their conditions from one of 4 choices: Normal, Mud/Ruts, Sand, Snow.

In the 'Normal' setting, the torque is geared towards the front wheels and provides power as necessary to the back wheels. The 'Mud/Ruts' setting, holds longer lower gears to prevent shifting, while maintaining its momentum through the terrain. The 'Sand' setting enables the vehicle an aggressive throttle to maximize the wheel torque. The traction control is also turned off in the sand setting to allow the wheels to spin. In the 'Snow' setting on the other hand, the traction control works to prevent wheel spin and to keep you slip free on icy, snowy roads. Also included in this 4WD package is the 'Hill Descent Control', designed to lower vehicle speeds on low-speed descents off-roading.   All located right by the shifter in the console, your terrain needs are close by and easy to use.

While it makes me happy that there has been no snow recently,  i was saddened to not even have the chance to try to get the Explorer stuck in a snowbank.  I think the Explorer would do fairly well in our Canadian winter.  Since our test drive week was scheduled mid-monsoon season in these parts, we did manage to get the Explorer dirty and test out her 'mud-rutting' skills!

On our property we have a hill that DaddyO likes to tear up often in his 1987 Jeep Wrangler YJ. Days of rain in, it only seemed appropriate that we try to take the Explorer UP the hill.

The Explorer enjoyed being dirty; it looked good on her too!

Overall Impression 4WD: The 2011 Ford Explorer 4WD package has taken the guesswork out of off-road driving, by allowing the driver to customize their 4-wheel needs to keep exploring!

I think it's awesome that you and I are going to have completely different experiences in the same vehicle. I'm pretty sure there will be no mud boggin on our trip! Or, maybe I should use the explorer as an excuse ;)
